| Wauwatosa Alderman Jim Sullivan is challenging state Sen. Tom Reynolds, a West Allis Republican, in what will shape up to be one of the more interesting contests for a state Senate seat in 2006. Yes, that's right -- 2006. Sullivan, a Democrat, is getting a jump on the competition.
What makes it so interesting is not only Sullivan's infectious enthusiasm for crafting sound public policy, but Sen. Reynolds' curious track record.
Reynolds has made a reputation for himself as being a curious duck. He proudly wears the label "evangelical Christian," and his own children are home-schooled. He sent out a Christmas card a few years ago depicting himself as Joseph, the worldly father of Jesus. Reynolds supports the anti-family TABOR proposal and is a staunch opponent of family planning and contraceptive education.
Sullivan, on the other hand, brings different credentials to the table in the District 5 race. As an alderman, he fought to protect children by keeping smoking out of restaurants. He opposes giving big box retailers a free ride, and supports forcing them to tear down a building if it becomes a blighted eyesore.
This race is sure to shape up to be a hot fall in 2006..
